Isn't it a bit ridiculous how I always have trouble writing things here except, apparently, when I shouldn't? As I'm leaving the country on Tuesday I won't have time to respond if I were to post an entry after tonight. Blah.
I suppose the end of the year is a time for contemplation on the time that has passed, as well as what lies ahead. As a rule, I don't like the passing of time; or perhaps I should say that it's always been hard for me to accept. I used to feel as if I was engaged in a constant race against it, always too slow and too far behind. I have a lot more self-distance these days (but it took an existential crisis and a couple of months in therapy to get there).
That being said, more has happened in 2012 than I can probably think of. I've had Georgian food in St. Petersburg, stopped by churches in Rome at ten PM to removed my shoes and translate Latin inscriptions and been assaulted by the weather in the Swedish archipelago. I've graduated from upper secondary school, written the most awesome thirty-page essay my school ever saw and made a new friend at the same time. I've started attending university and got my first proper job. I feel better about my writing and myself in general; I'm learning how to coper with my mental health issues better and better.
2012 has been a pretty good year, overall. Hopefully 2013 will keep up that trend.
2012 hasn't been a particularly good year for reading though; then again I somehow expect me to have as much time over to read as I did when I was a child, which skews the perspective a bit.
The Sorrows of Young Werther - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
The Book of Lost Things - John Connolly
Scream of the Shalka - Paul Cornell
Good Omens - Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman (reread)
The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins
Catching Fire - Suzanne Collins
Kallocain - Karin Boye
Doctor Who and the Abominable Snowmen - Terrace Dicks
Skräck (Boken som Gud Glömde) - Mattias Lindeblad (a book about horror as a subculture in Sweden throughout the 70s and 80s... these are the things I read during summer break apparently)
Kris - Karin Boye
Deathless - Catherynne M. Valente
Time, Unincorporated Vol. I (a collection of Doctor Who fanzine articles)
Vampire Science - Johnathan Blum & Kate Orman
Black Heart - Holly Black
Supergods - Grant Morrison
Palimpsest - Catherynne M. Valente
Genocide - Paul Leonard
Doktor Glas - Hjalmar Söderberg (reread)
Time, Unincorporated Vol. II
Alien Bodies - Lawrence Miles
The Hobbit - J. R. R Tolkien
21 books all in all, which isn't so bad... four of which are nonfiction, two rereads and five Doctor Who novels. And that's not counting fanfic or comics, of course.
Your main fandom of the year?
Doctor Who, definitely. I had gotten into the fandom properly come summer break, when I started binging the classic series (at least two serials per day, no really) and at the same time, Marvel reached its height in popularity because of the movie... and I sort of drifted out properly at that point. The MCU was never my favourite, sorry to say, and when that's what 98% of the fic out there is about these days... it was good while it lasted.
Your favorite film you watched this year?
desecrets made me buy Withnail and I (because we both have excellent taste and I trust her judgment... most of the time), thus subjecting me to emotional damage lasting all of 48 hours and quotes to last me a lifetime.
Your favorite book read this year?
Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente. She really blew me away; not only is her writing gorgeous in and of itself, but she has a way with words, tapping inspiration from myths and legends that makes for incredibly compelling and timeless stories. I haven't actually had a reading revelation like this since I was fifteen and started reading Neil Gaiman's works. And Catherynne M. Valente is better than Gaiman, in my opinion.
Deathless itself is just... it's modern Russian history through the lens of Russian folklore, it's meta and a deconstruction of fairy tales and how was I supposed to resist, really?
Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
Probably either "Lungs" by Florence + the Machine or "Let England Shake" by PJ Harvey.
Your favorite tv show of the year?
Does Classic Who count? I haven't really been watching anything but Doctor Who and The X-Files tbh.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Classic Who is the new fandom of the year, so... expect a lot of this. The divide in Doctor Who fandom between classic and new is very disputed, and while I would love to see more fans of the older stuff (because who would say no to an active and prosperous fandom, right?) I also love how small and welcoming the Classic Who corner has been.
Alternatively, I also discovered that Matt Fraction is actually a really swell guy. Once I managed to deal with this sudden shift in my perception of reality I have come to appreciate that a lot. Though it doesn't mean I'll forgive him his run on Invincible Iron Man.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Does "every time Tumblr fandom is being gross" count? Series 7 of Doctor Who has been pretty bad too though. Avengers vs. X-Men wasn't much of a disappointment, because it's exactly the kind of dreary senastionalist shit I expect from Marvel events.
Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
What does this even mean
Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
Nope I still don't understand
Your biggest squee moment of the year?
This is an impossible question
do you even know how often I have to get up and do a little dance because I'm suddenly struck by how lovely a character is or because they're being cute in a fic or because people are writing awesome meta about them
do you
The most missed of your old fandoms?
Good Omens. Which, admittedly, was a while ago, but I... don't think I've felt as welcome in a fandom since that one (except possibly for the Doctor/Master corner of Who fandom). I still adore the source material, of course, but there's also this sense that I was such a different person then and I cringe in embarrassment when I think about it sometimes. So.
The fandom you haven’t tried yet, but want to?
I don’t really... get tempted by other fandoms easily? I mean, fandom is important to me and I put a lot of emotional investment in it (which might be why I'm so bad at delving into multiple fandoms simultaneously) so it's not something I actively try to force myself into.
For the sake of the meme, let's say Lord of the Rings though. Because I swear my entire social circle is and that fandom is resurfacing like kraken from the deep, and I am so Tolkien-deprived it's impossible for me to follow a conversation about it.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
50TH ANNIVERSARY!1 and uh. There are lots of cool movies and stuff coming out as well (Star Trek XII! More Hobbit! More Marvel! Yes good).
