I said about a week back that I was rapidly becoming addicted to 8tracks now when I have a working computer again, and that I should probably make a rec list if only to have something to post here.

In a way it feels strangely personal to make a list like this, if only because it reveals something which can say a lot about a person: their taste in music.

Well, "taste". As this list probably shows, my taste in music is... rather inconsistent, tbh.

Doctor Who

Ticket To Ride For the first British Invader, The First Doctor, a British Invasion mix.

Seekingthespheres has several genre-specific mixes for different Doctors, but I think I like this one best; most of the songs fit (as well as you can expect pop music to do-- as someone who once tried to make an Eurovision-themed Doctor Who mix (no, really) I can testify how hard that can be) and the genre just generally appeals to me.

Into the Light of the Dark Black Night Fanmix for the 1960s Doctor Who companion Victoria Waterfield.

A sort of gothic, fairy tale-esque mix for Victoria, the proverbial princess in the tower guarded by Daleks. The dreamy and melancholic music works rather well. It's also very nice to listen to late at night. :3

Past Tense Imperfect The Master and the Doctor's relationship on Gallifrey in retrospect, and the persistence of its wreckage in their hate and love. Nothing can erase a history.

I think ship mixes, especially of popular and angsty pairings, can easily become cloying because there are certain songs/bands that reappear over and over again, which serves to make the the pairing seem rather unoriginal. Theta/Koschei in particular seems to fall victim to Angsty Relationship Songs for Young People (probably because those songs are easier to find This mix... sounds a lot like those mixes, but it's a slightly different take that makes it rather enjoyable to me. The "in retrospect" makes an unexpected difference.

Two Can Be As Bad As One Music for being trapped on a TARDIS with your best enemy.

Shalka fanmix. SHALKA FANMIX. That is all.

Lovecraftian

Not In the Spaces We Know, But Between Them A mix inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft.

One of my favourite mixes on this list; it's strange, creepy and proper Lovecraftian, without including genres I'm generally less fond of *CoughMetalCough*. They've also made a Night Vale fanmix I like. Fun fact: the Tiger Lillies songs here were used in the Necronomicon musical I saw in november.

Are You There, Dagon? It's Me, Margaret A mix about a contemplative Deep One.

Look at that title. Look at it. Do you honestly think I could not include a mix with that title? This might be my favourite idea for a mix ever. I mean, the songs are nice too, but it's the sheer wonder of the concept that truly gets to me.

Other

Swing for Robots A bunch of moderately upbeat electroswing / swinghouse songs from some killer artists.

Electroswing is a thing that exists. Which I didn't know, but am now very happy about. A nice, mostly-upbeat mix that makes for nice background music.

Songs Hermann Gottlieb Has Formally Filed Complaints About

A Pacific Rim mix. Not that I... go pilfer other people's fandoms out of sheer curiousity sometimes... *Cough* Anyway, I discovered this only yesterday and have listened to it at least four times since then. THAT IS HOW MUCH I LIKE IT.

Fallen Empires A mix for great cities, realms, and worlds that have burned to the ground in the fires of war.

Because sometimes you just need a mix with Bastille, Imagine Dragons, and nearly every other disgustingly popular alt rock band active right now. About Dystopias. Yes.

Långa Landet Falukorv A Swedish mix, with music in Swedish, by Swedish bands & singers.

Just some catchy Swedish music I enjoy that's actually in Swedish.

My internet at home isn't fast enough for 8tracks, so I can't go listen to these right now, but I just wanted to say that I really like that Fallen Empires mix too. (And that you are definitely not the only one with an inconsistent taste in music.)

It's funny, actually. When I'm at school/in the dorms, everyone else is always complaining about how slow the internet is, and I'm just sitting there thinking, "...This is the fastest internet I've ever had." When I'm at home, the songs on 8tracks just... don't load. Or load in short, 5-10 second long segments, and it's just not fun to listen to. I do sometimes have to manually skip when I'm in the dorms, but otherwise it plays consistently. Which, yay.

I do like dystopias, but mostly in the sense that I like almost every genre.
