This post will once again reaffirm two things about me:

1. I am really bored now in summer.

2. I am a huge fag.

So here. Have a DenSu fanmix.

Cover art by [livejournal.com profile] stalkerbunny. Love her! o/

I'm not going to write an entire "Introduction to DenSu", but it's probably quite important to have heard my personal view on the pairing before trying to make sense of this fanmix. Personally, I prefer to explore the dualistic nature of Sweden and Denmark as persons vs nations. Without making this sound too sappy, I think it's more interesting to see them unable to compromise between their own desires and their roles as nations and inability to protest what their ruler decides, than just enemies or rivals.

Former DenSu fanmixes I've seen focus more on the historical rivalry and a relationship that is broken off in the end. To make things more challenging for myself and because I have an instrumental mix on their shared history lying around somewhere on the comp I decided to put this in modern time, with several loose ends from the past.

The mix consists of ten tracks, two sides: first part for Denmark, second for Sweden. It is constructed so that each track corresponds to one topic from each character's perspective: first track in Denmark's part is about the past, and when it comes around to Sweden's part his first track (sixth song on the entire mix) comments the same thing.

What do you mean, I complicate things? Download link at the bottom. All songs in foreign languages except first and last tracks were translated by me.

This Old Road - A DenSu Fanmix

Side A - Denmark

1. Waylaway - The Mediaeval Baebes

(Translated from Middle English)

Evilly I tore your heart to pieces
And now I deeply regret it
Oh woe

But you will not understand
To be deceived in such a shameful way
Oh woe

You have banished me into the woods
Forever

The Past. This song might be a bit overdramatic, but it was the only one I found that illustrates my point: Sweden leaves, and Denmark feels at least partly responsible.

2. History Sticks to Your Feet - Modest Mouse

At the movies, eyes iced over
Walking sideways, through the gutters
And you realize life sticks to your feet, your history
I'm gonna slap that look off your face like life don't hold no mystery
All those red marks on our shoulders
Self back patting, homemade trophies
Well the past only exists as tiny bricks we burn to release all its memories
I've had enough with rolling boulders, I want more moss on me

Clocks to splinters but time goes forward
And when them trees drop leaves your feet collect their memories
I guess all us snakes find our tails pretty damn tasty!

Time passes, as it is wont to do, and at some point there is an attempt at mending the past. Then again, while forgetting old mistakes you might also remember the things left unresolved.

3. Drømte Mig En Drøm – Valravn

(Translated from Danish)

I dreamt a dream last night
Of silk and expensive cloth
Wore a dress so light and smooth
In the rich beams of the shining sun
//Now the clear morning dawns//

To the young ones’ pack I went
I was drawn to song and dance
Confidently I met his gaze
And laid my hand in his
//Now the clear morning dawns//

All the others looked at us
They smiled, and they laughed
Soon the dance completely stopped
Only the two of us danced there
//Now the clear morning dawns//

I dreamt a dream last night
Of silk and expensive cloth
Far away he raised his hat
And drearily my dream came to end
//Now the clear morning dawns//

Longing.

(This song has ooold roots. Wikipedia has an article on it. I have taken it slightly out of context, but yeah. Translated from Danish to the best of my measly Swedish ability. :D Also, despite the last verse being listed by the band it isn't sung...)

4. Moonland - Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

Under the snow, under the stars
The whispering DJ on the radio
The whispering DJ on the radio
I'm not your favourite lover
I'm not your favourite lover

And it must feel nice
(It must feel nice)
To leave no trace
That somebody needs you
And that somebody is me

Under the stars, under the snow

Your eyes were closed
You were playing with the buttons on your coat
In the back of that car

In moonland
Under the stars
In moonland
And I followed that car

The past isn't the only thing getting in the way.

5. The Tinderbox - Patrick Wolf

And now I live alone in this dirty old attic
And my friends have no strength to climb up the stairs
So in the dark (dark), I spark (spark) a small box of tinder
And your love is ferried to here

On a
Black dog
Black burning eyes
Come carry you here to my room
Dark to one spark and I have your heart
But as quick as you come, you're always gone so soon, soon, soon
Gone so soon, soon, soon
Gone so soon, soon, soon
Always gone so soon
So soon

Why does no flame here last for long?
Oh no, no spark rides dark for long
Oh no
A thousand kisses are no Judas kicking in to stop me
From trying to start a fire
Start the fire
Start the fire, fire, fire, fire, fire, fire, fire
Deep down in me

I will let this speak for itself. Also, song based on H.C Andersen tale, +10 nerd points to me.

Side B - Sweden

1. Får Jag Ej Vandra - Eter

(Translated from Swedish)

If I may not wander
As everybody else have wandered
Then I shall find the paths
That no one else have found

And your hands
And snow-white loins
And your pretty mouth
Each hair that hangs down to your shoulders
They shine to me like reddest gold

Sweden leaves, but does not forget.

2. Where are the Angels - Eivør Pálsdóttir

We saw that crazy king again, with his lies and fears and shame
He was talking about genocide and learning everybody’s name
Has he really always been this way, full of hopeless tomorrows
He’s stolen the sacred key and locked men in sorrow

Where are the angels
Where are the angels

This old dirt road, this grey sky day
Sometimes the world gets old and I feel so insane
Then you whisper in my ear “It’s OK my friend”
And our love is given and our hearts will mend

Moving away from the past and its hostile rulers.

3. Mera Önska Myckit Få - Ranarim

(Translated from Swedish)

That’s how it still is;
The one who gets much wants more
Such it is with love;
Wish for much and get a lot
Who is ever satisfied with
The joys of sweet love?

You lose your sight
And still know the pain of love
You lose both words and voice
Still keep love in your chest
Even those who do not hear
Die from the sorrows of love

(Miri it is while sumer ilast
With fugheles song
Oc nu neheth windes blast
And weder strong

Ey, what this nicht is long
And ich, with wel
Michel wrong…)

One old and grey
Still desires love
The one who’s had a lot
Says it is so good
That he must have more
Before he is laid down

Despite the centuries that have passed, some things refuse to be buried.

(This song is really talking about old age, of course, but I figured it worked just as well for "long time". It's a traditional song from the 17th century, with some random Middle English thrown in, so the translation is rather simple. But at least what it fundamentally is about hasn't been lost.)

4. One Chance - Modest Mouse

We have one chance.
One chance to get everything right.
We have one chance, one chance.
And if we're lucky we might.
My friends, my habits, my family, they mean so much to me.
I just don't think that it's right.
I've seen so many ships sail in,
just to head back out again and go off sinkin'.

I'm just a box in a cage.
I'm just a box in a cage.

There is safety in the life Sweden has built up; not to mention, sometimes you can't just leave the things and people you love to pursue other of the same kind.

5. Tú Ert Alt - Eivør Pálsdóttir

(Translated from Faroese)

You are all
You’re the sunlight
You are all
You’re the dark night
You are all
You’re the sweetness
All that is shining
And all that fades out

You are all
You are sadness
You are all
You are tears that run from my eyes
All that is shining
All that is fading
You’re the beginning
And the ending

You are all
You are summer
You are all
You are winter, spring and fall
You are all
The heart wants to cherish
You are all
The heart wants to perish

Lyrically, a pretty good song for Sweden's split feelings about Denmark, I think. Even if it is terribly, terribly sappy. Wanted to use the English version of the song, then I realised I don't have it. xD

I'd be rather grateful if you tell me if you snag and/or like this. Besides the fact that comments are always fun, it'd be nice if someone shares my slightly unusual taste in music. XD

I'm so glad right now I managed to...egg you on to post this. >3< ♥ Such lovely songs...I already know I'll be listening to this a lot. :D And do believe I might check out other songs by some of these artists too >3>

I know you were worrying about the genre's clashing...and now I can officially say pffft at that. The songs mesh together well, and what difference there is is actually mostly just refreshing. ¤3¤
Even Mera Önska Myckit Få, which I've had on the mp3 before, sounds somehow new in this new context...in a good way.

Lastly, Tinderbox~ I like all of the songs, but that one is so lovely and really gives a new angle on the original story. ; 3 ;

You mean bribe and pester me? I'm still a bit apprehensive. It doesn't seem to be a complete failure so far... xD And I'm glad you like it at least! *Clings* Just tell me if you want some.

Aowh, that's a relief. :D Usually when I construct my own playlists/fanmixes I try to think of slow introduction, rising until climax and then fading out as it ends. I kept this to a certain extent I think with the introductions to resp. character, but overall the meaning and order of the songs were too important to care about aesthetics this time around.

I love that song so much. ;___; Not only are the lyrics great, the song itself is too; plus I'm a complete sucker for songs based on fairytales. Also, H.C Andersen. <3 And now I'll think of DenSu when I hear it too. Two things to love about it!

This FST excites more then you can imagine!
I thought I was the only girl who liked Folk music and alternative.
I mean you have Modest Mouse and valravn! I mean I thought I was the only person who knew about Valravn (okay this maybe true for only American person)
Now I loved how much thought you put into this. I wish more FST-ers (I know that isn't a word) would do this because sometimes, look at the lyrics and go, "WTF how did you get that" but the fact you thought of each character and what they would think is pretty awsome.
So no you don't complicate things you just make them more awsome.

So definatly downloaded and thank you so very much.
(also I think mor fst-ers in hetalia should add more traditional music)

:D Modest Mouse is one of few bands who play modern music I really like. They're awesome. <3 But folk music is, well, "my" music. I don't really know why I like it so much. But I love the poetic lyrics and exciting tales, and the sound of the fiddle... x3

(Didn't listen to Valravn until recently though, since their music is so modern I wasn't sure it was worth paying for. *Shot*)

I was a bit worried the lyrics would make no sense, to be honest. At the same time I didn't want to rant about my interpretation of the lyrics and not let people decide for themselves, so I tried to keep the comments short. x3

Thank you. <3 You're welcome! (I can see why they don't though... It can be hard to find lyrics that suit.)

Oh folk songs. ♥ This is so lovely~!
I've always been trying to get my hands on some Swedish/Danish folk songs but not understanding the language proves a barrier.

Would you happen to the Swedish/Danish lyrics to these songs?

Date: 2010-07-09 01:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] taiyou_to_tsuki.livejournal.com
Yay~
I can see why... I have problems finding Finnish folk music sometimes. Probably doesn't help that the Danish folk music scene is comparatively small.

Yup! The Danish one is available here, on the band's website (http://www.valravn.net/downloads/Valravn_lyrics_valravn.html). The Swedish ones, I have lying around. I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow for a week, so I'm just going to copy them down here now so you won't have to wait for long if you're in a very distant time zone. |'D

Får Jag Ej Vandra

Får jag ej vandra
Som alla andra vandrat har
Skall jag ock finna de stigar
Som ingen annan funnit har

Och dina händer
Och snövita länder
Och din vackra mun
Vart hår som uppå dina axlar hänger
Dem lyser för mig som rödan guld

Mera Önska Myckit Få

Så går det ännu till
den mera får den mera vill
Med kärlek är ock så
mera önska och myckit få
Vem är man ser förnöjd
med söta kärleks fröjd?

Man mister ögon sin
vet lell av kärleks pin
Man mister mål och röst
har kärlek i sitt bröst
Den är som intet hör
av kärleks sorger dör

En gammal är och grå
till kärlek har åtrå
Den som har mcyket fått
säger det är så gott
Att han måste hava mer
förrän han lägges ned

I could not agree with your icon more. I wish I could learn a Scandinavian language someday - but I have yet to fluent in one of my own languages haha. ( not to mention, it seems so hard )

THANK YOU.

I have an annoying habit of studying lyrics to songs I don't understand. And if you live in Sweden, yes, the other side of the world. Have fun on your holiday!

I love that icon. I have a slightly religious relationship to languages, lol, so it works. XD (Depends, I guess. Some aspects are - Norwegian and Swedish have nasty vocal intonation for example - and some are simpler. Those who speak English and other Germanic languages are usually off to a better start than others though. :'3)

You're welcome! Also I typoed *mycket in the last paragraph. |D Which is how it's supposed to be spelled, despite it earlier being "myckit". Folk songs have a tendency to throw grammar rules and vocabulary out the window sometimes.

And I did have fun, thank you. Been to Tunisia, it was very exciting. And hot. First time I've been to Africa... |D

As a rule - Europeans seem to be better at languages and singing, oh woe than us. It's all very wonderful.
I've never heard Swedish being spoken before, only in music. WHich makes it sound absolutely lovely, of course. I've heard that there are a mound of DenSu written in Finnish though, which almost makes me want to learn it asgjdfhasd.

LOL. Well same with Japanese folk too. <3

Oh dear. Hot. That doesn't suit me at all. Dx
Still very lucky though. I wish to travel there someday.

Well if you're going to believe certain other nationalities, Swedes sound like they sing when they talk anyway. I'm not quite sure I agree but I suppose it makes sense compared to staccato languages like Finnish. xD Waitwoah really? Brb blackmailing my Finnish girlfriend into translating DenSu fics.

It's sort of charming though... People could be really creative with language.

Me neither, actually. Mum's decision. But I survived, somehow. It was okay as long as you stayed out of the sun. And the food was great and cheap and there were Roman ruins to visit so it was fine~

'S a good place for Swedes to work. Whee. I have too many actual language courses in school to pick up one online... xD

Yes, because you really want to ask your girlfriend to translate male/male fics. xD Although she likes that pairing too... *Ponders* Oooh. I haven't written much lately. I just have ideas lying around I never touch. 8|

Oho. I've only been to London, twice. 'S a nice city, but so many people~ Ahah, I've never been to Denmark. I think my mother harbours some kind of grudge, since she was treated badly when she went there. Maybe she just had bad luck, but according to her people were rude in shops and restaurants when she spoke to them in Swedish, but after a couple of days when switching to English nothing like that occurred again.

And every time this is brought up (because I want to go to Denmark damnit) there is an obligatory rant of "Those fucking Danes thinking they're so friggin' fun and liberal, I've had tons of more fun and met friendlier people in Norway!", which is... Oddly amusing.

I don't really have anything against Spanish, 's just... Boring. I wish I'd picked German, I would've had actual use for that. ;__;

Indeed. Norway seems to be popular.

This urge to learn a Scandinavian language has risen to new heights lately. 8( I was researching the Kalmar Union for a DenSu RP, but I hit a road block, in that there aren't many books on the topic in English. We have quite a few in Swedish, and around 3 in German. B(
Honestly. For those studying Scandinavian history, you would have to understand the friggin language before you could research it properly here. Largest library in the southern hemisphere my ass.

Really? I always felt it was sort of stupid for Swedes/Danes/Norwegians to hate on Swedes/Danes/Norwegians. It's like hating yourself a bit, we're way more similar than we'd ever admit. GIVE US SOME TIME IT'S ONLY BEEN 200 YEARS, compare that to the grudge we've nursed since before the countries even EXISTED

All the people I talk to online regularly are Finnish and Norwegian. TOO SWEDISH OMG

Aww. D: I'm not too surprised though. We used to be the countries at the edge of the world. >.> Inner struggles in particular like the Kalmar Union is bound to be rather scarcely represented in history books in English. If you have any particular information you want to know though I could look it up, I have several books on the subject.

I've noticed that myself... Especially in a genre as small as my favourite. |D There's of course alos the fact, and this goes for all countries I guess but perhaps especially the Scandinavian ones, that major artists often sing in English. Now, I don't have anything against English, but sometimes it gets quite ridiculous. =3=

I have a problem with metal; it's too hard on my ears. Even if some of it sounds good, there's the fact that I have tinnitus that doesn't need to get worse. :P

that's very true. if you want to make it as an international artist...you need to sing in english. the danish band Nephew are pretty cool lke that..seeing as they use english and danish...and that's just instant win :D

ahh.. yeah. tinnitus is no fun at all. whenever I go to concerts I always wear ear plugs :D and I'm hardly the person to blast music into my ears at a too high volume. folk metal is hillarious..or pirate metal

I love Nephew~ Their lyrics are lovely and the mix of languages sounds great. I wish more artists would do that, and not just with English.

I don't go to concerts very often. So I tend to forget ear plugs. xD Pfft, the little I've heard of folk metal frankly sounds ridiculous. But that's because I'm a wannabe ethnologist who's deeply immersed with folklore and traditions so to me most modern bands who use those themes end up sounding even more exaggerated than the poetry of the national-romantic era. xD

I ALWAYS carry earplugs...they're permanatly living in my purse XD
I adore folk lore and traditions and I think that's why I actually like metal like that. Because they re-intrepret old songs or sing the same lyrics, but with more modern instruments.
The bad TYR is a good example of the latter. They sing old Faeroese songs, but use electric guitars and drums as well as more traditional instruments. they also sing in theri native language for most songs, so that's added bonus :D

Thanks. :3

*Just enervating.*

I guess I'm a person who's very bound by tradition. Because it's not just the music that is important to me, it's the lyrics and what cultural context it has been sung in. And most modern bands don't sing traditional songs, they write their own songs based on their view of cultural phenomenon (myths and folklore) from a modern perspective that doesn't fit with the theme's historical role. And the outcome is often bloody silly (like when bands like Týr take on a heavily pagan image... And sing medieval ballads from a Christian tradition... Um, yeah).

There's also the fact that I just prefer the traditional sound. Wailing guitars has never captured my heart like a wailing fiddle.

* best of luck to you then! although I'm sure you'll do fine*

hahaha, indeed. I can certanly understand why it would perhaps make you a bit..frustrated. And fair enough, they do perhaps use a lot of 'artistic' freedom and will alter certain things. But despite knowing all that, I must say I still find the music fun and interesting to listen to (A bit like the Swedish metal band Sabaton, they base their songs on well known battles form history, like the Battle of Gallipolli or the Panzer Battalion) it might not be entriely historicaly acurate, but at least they're not following the dull and mindnumbingly boring pop-music that's so over played.

Ahh..see I can apreicate both (but perhaps not as well as you can)
I love the sound of a fiddle or violin, it's haunting and bautiful. (I've got no musical tallent myself, so perhaps that's why really any instrument can make me mezmerized...XD )
But sometimes I'm just in teh mood for screaming and angry songs, other times I'll turn of all the lights and jsut lie in bed with my eyes half closed and lsiten to Grieg or Bethoven...it all depends what mood I'm in.
