Last week was... not too great. I quit Greek, for one, which didn't do much in the way of encouragement. I don't really regret I did it, because I really don't think I would have managed that sort of workload without crashing sooner or later, and I sort of owe it to myself not to let it go that far. Still, I hate the feeling of never completing anything, letting every task I undertake remain half-done.

So that's been the main fuel behind my depressive state since thursday. Which means I've spent the entire weekend curled up in bed listening to audio plays, when I wasn't desperately trying to finish an assignment I should've started at least five days before handing it in.

Haven't been working either, and probably won't in February. Will probably have time to feel bad about that later, too.

IN MORE RIVETING NEWS, [community profile] unconventionalcourtship "is a panfandom fic fest where you write and post a 1000w+ fic based on a M&B/Harlequin plot. Fics will be posted to this community, staggered through March 15th-April 14th 2013.". So if this isn't the most awesome fic fest you've ever heard of, then... you probably shouldn't sign up. Except you totally should. Because it will be awesome (and lolarious, probably).

Speaking of sign-ups, I now have a GoodReads account. Hopefully this means I'll be more encouraged to read this year; feel free to add me. Though I haven't nearly completed the list of everything I've read... and probably won't. Meh.

In Whovian news, the return of the Ice Warriors has been confirmed; I was excited about this for about the 1.5 seconds it took me to find out the episode will be written by Mark Gatiss. *Shot* Still, they're one of my favourite Who monsters, so hopefully he won't disappoint and I... won't be too critical.

Also, a list of release dates for Classic Who DVDs in 2013 includes The Mind of Evil, Terror of the Zygons, The Ice Warriors and Scream of the Shalka. I forgot to be CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC about this and ran around the entire floor + facedived into bed before I remembered. :D

It does seem too good to be true but then I realised most people don't care about Scream of the Shalka at all so right now I'm mostly focusing on being pissed off about the amount of Pertwee serials I already own and adore getting Special Editions. :P

- Not doing too well at this uni thing so far; if I can't make it through February, I think I'll have to quit Greek. I don't want to, but my workload isn't really managable at this point and I can't afford the stress. I was close enough to another depressive slump before Christmas, I don't want to jump head first into another not even three months later. :/

(I've been sort of... not entirely here for the past week and probably forgotten to reply to tons of comments and entries, and I'm sorry about that.)

- On the other hand, procrastinating (as I have a bad tendency to do when I don't want to confront the reality of my studies) means I start putting my effort into things I shouldn't be doing, such as drawing. So far: slashy Claws of Axos illustration that I started and never finished months ago now coloured, lineart for Femslash February done aaannd... am currently sketching fanart of Cycladic fresco.

Also known as: my life, in three images.

- Failed to produce something for [community profile] who_at_50/who_at_50 in January. Cue guilt. I didn't foresee the massive amount of work I'd have to put into uni, especially at the beginning of term. So uh, I guess I'll try harder for February? Though I'm not sure it'll be what I'd originally planned, due to time restrictions... I might cave to temptation and write Liz/Rani... it's Femslash February, just sayin'.

- I also failed to even begin reading Option Lock for the henriettastreet readalong... a shame, as Xenophon's Anabasis is possibly the least riveting classic I've ever read, and that's what I've been trying to get through for most of the month.

- First class in Ancient Greek last night could have gone off to a better start, but it's... probably going to work out. I just don't know where I'm supposed to find the time to go through all the grammar as well as translating texts every week in between reading the bizarre amount of chapters I get for Antiquity. *Sigh* I'll manage, somehow.

- There should probably be something positive in this post... but I can't think of anything.
regndoft: (Wanderer in the 4th Dimension)
Because I need to stop procrastinating as well as add some organisation to my increasingly busy life.

For someone who has been writing for almost as long as she's known how to, I recently realised that I've actually never written a proper chapter fic. Sure, I've tried, but never successfully. Or I've deliberately avoided it because I've been under the impression that without knowing the ending I can't write a proper beginning, or manage an overall plot/theme.

So if my fellow fic writers have any advice, I'd love to hear it. Do you finish the entire story before publishing separate chapters? Do you keep notes while writing, or have you done avid planning beforehand? Do you even know where the story is going to end up when you start writing?

I keep worrying I'll somehow lose sight of the overarching plot if I focus on separate chapters, or not give the side characters enough to do, etc (especially since I usually write from one character's PoV). On the other hand, I worry about never finishing at all, as I tend to be easily distracted by new shiny plot bunnies.

I'll probably look for a bit of advice online as well, but fic writers have a pretty unique experience in that they can publish several chapters at separate times. And... I just don't know how to go about managing an epic!fic I've mostly finished already, but have a lot of editing to do and some key parts left to write (most notably the beginning).

Plow technology marks a critical threshold because a good piece of land suddenly becomes valuable. People want to keep particular fields and pass them on to their children. Defining legitimate heirs becomes important. Unlike in simpler economic systems, men start to worry about female premarital virginity, because they want to be sure that the children who will inherit the land come from the husband and not someone else.

Lo and behold, the heavens opened up and cast new light upon the history of civilisation!

Now the real question is why it took me a university course in Ancient cultures to find out about this.

In other news, uni continues to rock my socks off (HITTITES! and more Egyptians).

And, as I've been meaning to make a post like this for some time and need to distract myself from feeling guilty about not writing when I have the spare time for once... here is a list of fic ideas I've been meaning to write lately (and by lately I mean, like... the last six months?). Mostly Doctor Who, though not exclusively so.

- Antiqity studies Day 03: EVERYTHING IS INTENSE BUT SO MUCH FUN. I am simultaneously wondering if this course will seduce me onto the path of archaeology and becoming more and more assured that religious studies is My Thing.

- Most notably, I was reminded today of my love for Egyptian mythology; an old obsession rearing its head again, to be frank (when I was ten I wanted to be either an egyptologist or Sekhmet, Goddess of War - it was a tough choice, okay). I think that makes it even more compelling, actually; being able to revisit something you loved as a child and being able to develop a new understanding of it with age.

- Finished listening to Love and War!

Thoughts )

- Not sure what I am listening to next; I've got the rest of the Special Releases (UNIT Dominion, Voyage to Venus and Voyage to the New World), Shada, plus a bunch of Companion Chronicles.

- [community profile] who_at_50 is doing the Tenth Doctor / UNIT as themes this february (so if you haven't already joined, you should probably do that). Sadly, this means I have no excuse not to write my Liz-Shaw-vs-the-Rani case fic. So I better come up with a plot for that asap. 8'I

Apparently participating in LJ friending memes the same week you start uni again is a bad idea? I've been too busy "skimming" ten millennia of human development to say hello properly. I haven't even commented on other people's introductions properly... anyway.

Hello!

Behold, the long awaited introduction post!

At least it's not a bullet point list )

Oh, and I also have a Tumblr. And Skype + MSN in case anyone wants to talk.

Now, I have twenty pages left of Iron Age settlements in the Near East to read, so I should probably start to get around to finishing them...
regndoft: (Below the Thunders of the Upper Deep)
Monday evening, the night before uni starts again. Am currently trying to fill the hole where my talent should be with tea and sandwiches after another unsuccessful attempt at writing.

In more exciting news: hello and welcome, new friends! I should really type up a proper introduction post to link to on these occasions. As you can see, I'm posting this from DreamWidth, so if you've also migrated feel free to add me here as well. But suffice to say I wouldn't participate in friending memes on LJ if I didn't still hang around there. :)

I might do a proper introduction post when no more people will be dropping by (ssshh, it hasn't even been 24 hours!).

For now, an entry that's been a long time coming. Kind of. I think I promised [personal profile] aralias some Mike Yates meta ages ago and never got around to typing it down.

So, as I was bedridden last week, I re-watched Invasion of the Dinosaurs.

Spoilers! )

TL;DR when I watch TV about dinosaurs invading London I find mental illness metaphors. Death of the Author is a wonderful thing.

(Also this post it probably littered with mistakes and typos but I'll... deal with that when I don't need to sleep. Because uni tomorrow.)
regndoft: (He Speaks of Senseless Things {Time})
And then I didn't update for two weeks because I started work and got sick within five days. Never change, self.

So, these past five days have been a haze of watching X-Files (I'm on season 5 atm, and I really need to stop taking MONTHS-LONG BREAKS between seasons because I keep forgetting the overall storyline)and Doctor Who episodes. Today I actually managed to get dressed for the first time this week and make lunch that wasn't reheated carrot soup that I managed to cook up on Monday with some effort.

I have also listened to an absurd amount of audio plays, or at least a lot more than I'd usually get through in four days. Namely, the second half of the Fourth Doctor Adventures season one, which, the main thing I have taken away from is that Leela is possibly the most perfect fictional being in existance and Crispy!Master is capable of completely unexpected amounts of sass?? Also Leela/Master team-up on horseback was something I didn't know I wanted until it made me gasp for air.

Finished Dark Eyes today as well. Non-spoilery opinion is that I found it rather enjoyable... until the last part. I was absolutely delighted to have Paul McGann on my iPod again, and it has some good bits of writing and characterisation, but it's the kind of long story where the conclusion kind of makes or breaks it, and I didn't find "X and the Daleks" satisfying at all.

The GOOD bit is that it's a story about hope. Dark!Doctor has become something of a trope over the course of the years in NuWho, but Dark Eyes doesn't go too hard on the angst and emphasises the Doctor's search for hope in a way that feels genuine, and thus more compelling than some writing in the TV series (I am looking at you, Doctor "my companions became displaced in time and lived a happy life without me so I SHALL NEVER SAVE HUMANS AGAIN" Eleven).

I also really liked Molly O'Sullivan. Irish WWI nurse (okay, VAD, whatever) who is tough as nails and punches people in the face? Awesome.

BAD bits: it's a Dalek story going behind cut because spoilers.

... Wow, I went off a tangent there.

So I guess I'm listening to Love and War next? Probably Love and War.
regndoft: (Vestal {Ab Antiquo})
Came back from London and promptly collapsed into bed at 2 AM last night; have spent today mostly unpacking and Getting Shit Done.

Sadly I forgot the camera this time around, so now travel log I'm afraid. Suffice to say it was all very pleasant and if I even try to think about how much money we've spent I'll get nightmares, but it was my dad's 50th birthday, so I suppose some extravagance was in order (more than usual at least). Fun fact: I now know what bone marrow tastes like.

Finally managed to get Anabasis from the library, so hopefully I will have finished that before going back to Greek. My other new course this term begins the 22nd of January, and looks like it'll be a lot of fun. And expensive. Not sure how this term will work out, since I'll have less time to work than usual, but hopefully it will.

And I can't feel too upset about not being able to work as much. Even with all the time off over the holidays and because of depression these past months, the thought of going back makes me feel... not good. Urge-to-curl-up-in-bed-and-cry not good.

I also have a bazillion things I should be writing, including NaNo, which I chose to let cool off for a bit over Yuletide. I have so many ideas for fics, but most of them feel half-baked, so I never really get around to anything...

On the other hand, after visiting the library today I went and picked up some new art supplies, including sketchpads and... thick, coloured paper that was for sale. I was thinking I could do something crazy and creative (i e not like me at all) like cut-out art.

And if not, there's always drawing. Especially since I have a contribution for 50 Years of Whovians coming up in March, and it's never too late to get started on such things.

Isn't it a bit ridiculous how I always have trouble writing things here except, apparently, when I shouldn't? As I'm leaving the country on Tuesday I won't have time to respond if I were to post an entry after tonight. Blah.

I suppose the end of the year is a time for contemplation on the time that has passed, as well as what lies ahead. As a rule, I don't like the passing of time; or perhaps I should say that it's always been hard for me to accept. I used to feel as if I was engaged in a constant race against it, always too slow and too far behind. I have a lot more self-distance these days (but it took an existential crisis and a couple of months in therapy to get there).

That being said, more has happened in 2012 than I can probably think of. I've had Georgian food in St. Petersburg, stopped by churches in Rome at ten PM to removed my shoes and translate Latin inscriptions and been assaulted by the weather in the Swedish archipelago. I've graduated from upper secondary school, written the most awesome thirty-page essay my school ever saw and made a new friend at the same time. I've started attending university and got my first proper job. I feel better about my writing and myself in general; I'm learning how to coper with my mental health issues better and better.

2012 has been a pretty good year, overall. Hopefully 2013 will keep up that trend.

2012 hasn't been a particularly good year for reading though; then again I somehow expect me to have as much time over to read as I did when I was a child, which skews the perspective a bit.

2012 will be over in less than an hour, so I should probably write a bit about that... but first I should probably post my responses to that fic meme here for posterity. :P

Three prompts all in all (alas, I'm not wildly talented, nor am I wildly popular); two Good Omens and one Doctor Who. The GO bit surprised me as well, as I don't exactly blog an awful lot about it. Still, it's my favourite book, so I'm not complaining.

These couple of days after Christmas have been strangely hectic for me. I've been going places and meeting people and doing things, which has been fun, but exhausting. Now I won't have to do anything until... Tuesday next week. But that's because we're going to London, so I think I'll survive.

So I've been falling behind on the Who watching a bit (though I did manage to get my sister to watch The Robots of Death with me and enjoy it, which I am unreasonably pleased about) but I did finally finish reading The Hobbit, and got around to seeing the movie.

Non-spoilery opinion is that I really enjoyed it? More than I thought I would, maybe? I was never a huge Tolkien fan, and it's not a perfect movie; I would've liked them to tone down the drama and up the Hobbit-ness of it. As it is it feels like a LotR movie, both in good and bad ways. But I'm very much looking forward to the next one, so~

Also, I did a meme on Tumblr. Before posting the results here, I thought I could subject you to it as well.

1) Give me a pairing
2) Give me an AU setting
3) I will write you a three-sentence fic.
regndoft: (St. Michael {Sine Vinkulo Peccati})
Haven't updated in a week now; not that much have happened, thank Someone. The exam went... all right, I think. Considering how I've felt the past weeks I think I managed well, and I've talked to my teacher, who said I didn't have to worry and that there'd be time to catch up next term. Good.

Christmas came, Christmas went, and it was all quite nice. For the first time I can remember my family spent Christmas alone, without any friends or relatives, which was... a huge difference, to be honest. I quite enjoyed myself. The food was nice and presents lovely; there's not much more I can ask for for Christmas.

Finished The Hobbit, started reading Kursaal today. Planning to re-read Neverwhere when I go to London next week (next week! How time flies) and have reservated Xenophon's Anabasis and The Fellowship of the Ring from the library, too. Looking forward to reading the books I got for Christmas as well... lots of reading to do these two weeks before going back to work for good.

Also, Yuletide happened! I have received two amazing gifts so far, both for Catherynne M. Valente's book Deathless (which is one of my favourite books - the way to win my heart is contemporary Russian history told through a deconstruction of Russian myth and folklore, apparently).

Cut for size )
regndoft: (Time And Nyan In Space)
Called in sick for work for the rest of the week, because I am feeling extraordinarily shitty. This means money will be scarce in February, probably... then again I'll be studying a course full-time next term so I will actually receive an allowance to even things out.

Did I forget to mention that? Apart from Ancient Greek, I'll be taking a course in "Life and Culture in Antiquity" and I'm really looking forward to it. :D

... I am not looking forward to the exam on Friday so much. I have reached the point where I have so many aspects floating around in my head I didn't recognise a verb in present middle indicative (that's very very basic stuff, for those who never got into linguistics).

Anyway, yesterday, I spent eight hours making a gingerbread house.

More accurately, [livejournal.com profile] stalkerbunny, Radagasting and I spent eight hours in my kitchen making a gingerbread TARDIS.

Vworp vworp )

Eight hours is a bit long, but it should be pointed out that we went into this project with not much more than enthusiasm and cookie dough, so I think that it worked out all right. Also, we had to make an emergency run to the supermarket and eat dinner as well.

Overall, a hard day's work well paid off!
regndoft: (Wanderer in the 4th Dimension)
Life is a bit up and down atm, both because of internal and external factors. So I'm not going to talk about those things, but focus on things that actually make me feel better about myself. There.

- Somehow, despite Yuletide refusing to cooperate, I've been feeling... better about my writing lately. I walk into bookstores feeling a strange mix of envy and excitement, marvelling at the new and shiny covers standing in rows on the shelves. I don't know what changed, but suddenly imagining myself as an author isn't strange at all - even though it's something I never let myself believe I could accomplish for almost ten years.

- Today I finally posted the last package that needed sending for Christmas. And it wasn't a particular hardship either, as the sun was shining, the air was crisp and the sky a brilliant shade of blue... Usually when I go walking in winter, it's to be somewhere on time, work or university. I'd probably enjoy it more if I went out for proper walks by myself.

- Translated a short letter by Epicurus. Exam in less than a week and I still haven't started studying properly, but somehow I'm not too worried about that.

- Made gingerbread cookie dough! While listening to Christmas music. Very cathartic, somehow, and I love the smell of ground cloves.

- Holly Black has a Tumblr. This makes me pretty happy, ngl - Holly Black was one of those authors whose work I connected to when I was younger, and in more recent times (being able to read her works in English) I have realised that's partly because she's basically a huge geek. c:

- If you aren't following [livejournal.com profile] who_at_50 you probably should be, because it's a neat idea and shaping up to be great fun.

- Finished listening to The Nightmare Fair and started re-listening to Jubilee.

Did I mention I'm making this journal public again? I started f-locking ages back because of depression talk and other personal things, and then I never really broke the habit. But now I am!

In other news, I'm trying to keep my writing going by dabbling with drabbles. Even when I have better things to be writing, apparently. *CoughYuletideCough*

Anyway, these have been in the back of my mind ever since I watched The Myth Makers and The Daleks' Master Plan. At first I was considering making a (100 words) drabble for each Hartnell serial, but then I realised these unintentionally almost work as companion pieces? Idk. Might write more.
